He Threw Away Every Postcard Except Ours

A lot of investors look at each other as competition.

We’ve never really understood that mindset.

There’s more opportunity out there than any one person can handle, and some of the best deals we’ve ever seen came from relationships, not rivalry.

A while back, we sent out one of our humorous handwritten postcards to a homeowner here in Oregon. Nothing flashy. No giant “WE BUY HOUSES CASH” headline. Just a genuinely handwritten postcard that felt personal and made people laugh.

Later on, the seller called us.

And during the conversation, he told us something interesting:
He had thrown away almost every other postcard he received.

But he kept ours.

Why?

Because it made him laugh.
Because it felt real.
Because someone actually took the time to handwrite it.

That’s the power of authentic direct mail.

Most mail blends together. Same fonts. Same messaging. Same yellow postcards. Homeowners see them every day and toss them without a second thought.

But when something feels human, people notice.

Sometimes that means they stick your postcard on the fridge.
Sometimes it sits on the kitchen counter for months.
And sometimes, they call you before anyone else.

Now here’s the important part:
The property actually wasn’t the right fit for us.

A lot of investors would stop there and move on.

Instead, we called our friend and fellow investor neighbor, Jim, and told him to go take a look before the seller started calling everyone else.

That’s how this business should work.

Not every lead has to become your deal.
Not every investor has to be your competition.

The best opportunities often come from relationships, trust, and simply being the kind of person people want to work with.

And it all started because one handwritten postcard survived the trash pile.

Your next lead might already be sitting at the mailbox.
